Teddy bear “lashing” coverage gets Islamophobia Watch excited

‘Barbaric clash of values’

Muslims%20insulted%20by%20Teddy.jpg

The right-wing press is having a field day with the report that teacher Gillian Gibbons has been arrested in Khartoum after letting her class of seven-year-olds name a teddy Mohammed.

The Daily Express leader is headed “Barbaric clash of values” and opines that the actions of the Sudanese state “show how nasty is the Muslim code of sharia law” and indicate “a fundamental incompatibility between Islamic and Western values”.

The Sun mentions that Ms Gibbons’ children have refused to issue a statement and quotes a relative as saying that “they do not want to aggravate the situation”. But the Sun itself has no hesitation in doing just that. Its front page article is headlined “Muslims insulted by Teddy” and an editorial comment inside declares:

“The West is routinely condemned for demonising Muslims. But it’s hard to sympathise with a faith that demands 40 lashes for calling a teddy bear Mohammed. Every perceived slight seems punishable by violence or even death. Until Muslim leaders speak out publicly against such barbarity, East and West will never come to understand one another.”

So saying Shariah law is barbaric is Islamophobic then. Ok.

Perhaps the non Islamophobic thing to say would be that Shariah Law is great and if Sudane wanna give this woman lashes then more power to their elbow and anyone who object is a racist BNP loving Islamophobic imperalist.

Lol!

We didn’t reckon the Islamophobiawatchers would care much about the poor woman who might be lashed and be more bothered about stating the obvious that the press have used it for their own agenda.

Ofcom in bed with the BNP?

November 20, 2007

Predictably Islamophobia Watch have reacted to Ofcom clearing Undercover Mosque with suitable outrage.

Ofcom rules against ‘Undercover Mosque’

Channel%204%20logo.jpgAs had been leaked in advance, Ofcom has rejected complaints made by West Midlands Police, the London Central Mosque and the Saudi embassy over the notorious Channel 4 documentary Undercover Mosque. (Ofcom did however uphold a complaint about George Galloway’s Talk Sport radio programme. So you can see a sort of consistency here.)

Ofcom’s ruling has met with the approval of the Daily Mail, the Daily Telegraph, the British National Party, Jihad Watch, Harry’s Place and the Lib Dems (whose reputation as friends of the Muslim community – based mainly on the fact that they opposed the Iraq war for a couple of months before the invasion was actually launched – is looking increasingly threadbare).

Meanwhile over at the Spectator Melanie Phillips is calling for the West Midlands Police themselves to be investigated.

Islamophobia Watch list the BNP as one of those who approve Ofcom’s ruling, once again stating the no shit shirlock obvious that any group with a specific agenda against certain groups will applaud anything that does not show them in a very favourable light whether it’s genuine or not.

It comes as little surprise then that the BNP who think Muslims are the spawn of the devil himself would approve of Ofcom ruling in Undercover Mosque’s favour.

We expect IW will be wanting people to think this show’s Ofcom must sympathise with the BNP.

Undercover Mosque cleared by Ofcom

November 19, 2007

Islamophobia Watch and their friends haven’t started bleating about this yet but we are sure they will!

Ofcom to clear Channel 4 over Undercover Mosque

Undercover Mosque title screenThe police have been criticised for taking action against a television programme which exposed how some Islamic preachers use British mosques to spread a message of hatred and segregation.

Broadcasting watchdogs have cleared Channel 4 of wrongdoing over the controversial documentary about Muslim extremism.

The programme featured footage of preachers at a number of mosques, including one who praised the Taliban for murdering British soldiers.

West Midlands police rejected calls to take action against the preachers for stirring up racial hatred – and turned on the film-makers.

Three months ago, the police, backed by the Crown Prosecution Service, made a formal complaint to Ofcom, alleging that the way 50 hours of videotape had been edited was ‘distorted’.

But The Mail on Sunday has been told Ofcom has backed Channel 4’s claim that the film was fair and has criticised the police response.

The programme, Undercover Mosque, broadcast in January, featured TV footage of an Islamic preacher praising the death of a British soldier.

At a meeting in a Birmingham mosque, the cleric said: Do you know what was written in a newspaper? Hero of Islam! The hero of Islam is the one who separated his head from his shoulders!

Abu Usamah, a preacher at the Green Lane mosque in Birmingham, was secretly filmed saying: If I were to call homosexuals perverted, dirty, filthy, dogs who should be murdered, that is my freedom of speech isn’t it?

The film prompted the Saudi Arabian government to complain directly to the Foreign Office. The Dispatches documentary claimed the Saudis recruited young Muslims in the UK, trained them in Saudi Arabia and sent them back to the West to spread a radical ideology of intolerance and bigotry” through British mosques and Islamic organisations.

As we all know the issue here is whether the programme makers used selective editing and delibratly took things that were said out of context. It’s clear the Ofcom believe they did not.

But the main issue with the Islamophobiawatchers is that the programme makers dared criticise and expose bigoted views from some Muslims preachers at all as they believe to do so is “racist” and “Islamophobia”.

They believe that by scruitining and criticising even the most extremist and hateful views of some Muslims the media is siding with the government and supporting the war on terror.

Muslim brands Britain ‘Nazi’ – according to the Express

“War widows and MPs reacted angrily last night after a Muslim leader warned Britain was becoming like Nazi Germany. Dr Muhammad Abdul Bari said perceptions of Muslims were so negative there was a danger that people’s minds would be ‘poisoned as they were in the Thirties’. His comments, made on the eve of Remembrance Sunday, came as a Sunday Express poll showed the Conservatives surging into an eight-point lead over Labour on the back of public concern about immigration….

“Tory MP David Davies described Dr Bari’s comments as ‘extraordinary’. He said: ‘If there is a backlash in this country, it will come because of comments like this. Britain led the world against Nazi Germany. It is extraordinary that this man should be given a platform for his views and that the Government is affording him respect. The message has to go out that no one invited Muslims into this country – they chose to come here for a better way of life. Anyone who comes here has to learn our language and respect our way of life and traditions. There are far too many people who seem to think they do not have to obey our rules but demand that we change our way of life to suit them. It has got to stop’.

“War widows gathering for the national remembrance service at the Cenotaph in London also voiced anger. Kathleen Woodside, 87, from Liverpool, who helped to found the War Widows Association of Great Britain after her husband Charles was killed on the last day of the war in Italy on March 1, 1945, said: ‘I am against this kind of talk. It is as if the Muslims want to take us over’.”

Sunday Express, 11 November 2007

Islamophobia Watch once again sight the media misquoting a Muslim as evidence of “anti Muslim racism” in the media as if Muslims are the only ones who’s words have been twisted by the tabloid press.

Of course Mr Bari didn’t say that Britian is becoming like Nazi Germany. He warned against Britain becoming like Nazi Germany. Most people with a brain will see that!

But of course Islamaphobia Watch and co think the majority of the British non Muslim population are thick and will believe anything they read in the press about Muslims.

MCB head terror tactics rant turns to religious preaching platform

November 10, 2007

What started as an interview sensibly questioning some of the government’s anti terrorism laws becomes more of a platform for the head of the Muslim Council Of Britain to spout of his religious views.

UK terror tactics ‘create unease’

Abdul%20Bari%20at%20TUC.jpgThe head of the Muslim Council of Britain has said the government’s approach to terrorism is creating an atmosphere of suspicion and unease.

In a wide-ranging interview with the Daily Telegraph, Muhammad Abdul Bari said the amount of discussion relating to Muslims was disproportionate. He cited Nazi Germany in the 1930s as an example of how people’s minds could be poisoned against a whole community.

Dr Bari also called for more emphasis on positive aspects of Muslim culture. Scaring the community “If your community is perceived in a very negative manner, and poll after poll says that we are alienated, then Muslims begin to feel very vulnerable,” he said. “We are seen as creating problems, not as bringing anything and that is not good for society.”

BBC News, 10 November 2007

Muhammed Bari says Britain must beware of becoming like Nazi Germany. Oh how the Islamophobiawatchers will love to hear that! Yes we are on our way to locking Muslims in concentration camps!

A bit of right-wing panic over Muslim extremists doesn’t show signs of the beginning of a Holocaust against Muslims.

Mr Bari recomends making abortion more difficult and on living together suggest going back to a more religiously informed way of life.

He even suggests that British people could benefit from arranged marriages.

Oh dear oh dear!

Many of the Islamophobiawatching socialists would probably disagree with all that but they won’t. Don’t want to be seen as Islamophobic do they!

The double standards about books is unsurprising. Books which offend Muslims should be pulped but we can’t stop bookshops selling books Islamic books which preach hate.

Bari says we can’t go in and tell them what to sell. Bet he would be going in and telling them what to sell if they stocked the Satanic Verus.

Britz fails to impress Islamophobia watchers

November 4, 2007

Britz’s main message was that Muslims only become terrorists because they are angry about UK foriegn policy and unjust laws. This surely would have pleased the “Everyone hates Islam” mob. But obviously not.

‘Britz’ – yet another negative protrayal of Muslims and Islam

“This is just the latest in a seemingly never ending torrent of negative portrayals of Muslims and Islam. Both films and television will claim to tackle any number of difficult issues, yet they find it impossible to show Muslims in a realistic manner. If there is no room for our reflection in their media mirror, then it’s time we made our own mirrors.”

A Muslim blogger responds to the Channel 4 drama Britz.

Indiana Jo more or less rubbishes Britz’s “the authorities are victimising Muslims and arresting them for doing nothing wrong” line….

The issue of a woman being subject to a control order because a bulk quantity of curry powder was found in her family’s house seems like an attempt to emotionally manipulate us. While it is true that people were convicted of IRA terrorist activity in the 1970s on the basis of explosive being found on their fingers, which was actually derived from common household cleaning products, no such event as shown in Britz has happened as yet and, surely, the fact that curry powder is widely used in Asian cooking would surely occur to the authorities when issuing a control order.

  • I also find Sabia’s suicide unlikely given that the length of time she had spent under the control order was not that long and that it wasn’t stringently enforced; she was able to go to college and Nasima, who she was banned from meeting, nevertheless managed to sneak in at night.
  • Lol! We thought showing a Muslim woman being subject to a control order just for having curry powder in her house would have gone down well with those who constantly tell us the British government and police are “out to get” Muslims for the slightest little thing.

We thought Britz would have had the Islamophobiawatchers applauding to the cows come home by more or less showing Muslims as victims of the government’s and police’s oppresion and how if they turn to terrorism we can’t be surprised when they are so angry at how badly they have been treated.

    But it obviously hasen’t.
